Straw Polls

This just in from Fulton County:

Despite a strong organized push by Romney and paid staff for Giuliani, Fred Thompson won yet another straw poll victory that most thought would be better suited to a Giuliani.

Let me thank those that came out to support our efforts for Fred Thompson. As always, we will work to keep you up to date on the activities that we are pursuing to bring Fred Thompson officially into the race.

Thanks,
Gabriel Sterling
Coordinator
Fulton for Fred Thompson (part of the unofficial Draft Fred Thompson movement)

Senator David Shafer posted the results over on his legislative blog

Fred Thompson won a resounding victory at Georgia’s largest GOP 4th of July gathering. 247 votes were cast in the straw poll. Jason Shepherd and all of the Cobb volunteers did an outstanding job giving Fred Thompson a presence at the annual Barbecue and Marietta parade.
Fred Thompson: 30 percent
Ron Paul:17 percent
Mitt Romney: 15 percent
Mike Huckabee: 13 percent
Newt Gingrich: 12 percent
Rudy Giuliani: 10 percent
John McCain, Tom Tancredo, Jim Gilmore: 1 percent

BREAKING: Fred Thompson wins Georgia GOP Convention Straw Poll in Landslide

The poll, conducted by the Georgia Republican Liberty Caucus and the Georgia Young Republicans came out as follows:

Fred Thompson - 44%
Newt Gingrich - 18%
Rudy Giuliani - 15%
Mitt Romney - 9%
Mike Huckabee - 4%
John McCain - 2%
Duncan Hunter - 2%
Ron Paul - 2%
Tommy Thompson - 1%
Tom Tancredo, Sam Brownback, John Cox, Jim Gilmore - <1%

These results are all the more amazing considering that Mitt Romney attended the convention and had an event here last night. Newt Gingrich was the convention’s keynote speaker.

Fred Thompson’s only presence was a group of volunteer supporters from Georgians for Fred Thompson.

At the convention, it was also announced that more than forty current and former elected officials, including a former US Senator and the top two Republicans in the State Senate, were endorsing Fred Thompson.

More to come on this later ….
